Frank Meadow Sutcliffe
A nationally and internationally acclaimed pioneering photographer who helped to develop photography as an art form as distinct from a purely recording medium. Sutcliffe worked in Whitby from the mid-1870s until his death. His photographs truly capture the atmosphere of Whitby and its surrounding area; not only the landscapes but the people and their work.
Whitby Museum owns the full collection of F M Sutcliffe’s original glass plate negatives and also their fully enhanced versions from which these prints are taken.
