The sampler was stitched by Ann Lister in 1790 . Unfortunately, there is no other information given on the sampler , so it is not possible to identify her or where she stitched the sampler with any certainty.

The sampler was generously gifted to Whitby Museum in 1933 by H.M.& Bureh Thornhill of Bristol.

The original sampler was stitched on a heavy linen or canvas. It measures 280mm wide by 400 mm high. Due to thread loss and that the sampler is in a frame, this is not a completely true reproduction but a very close copy.
