Hannah Mary Ripley was born in march 1840 to John and Jane (nee Mercer) and lived on Baxtergate, Whitby. She was baptised at St Mary's church , Whitby. Her father was a ship owner . She also had a younger brother, Charles born in 1849. At the time of the 1851 census, the family had a servant . Hannah Mary lived in Whitby all her life and lived on her own means. Her obituary in the local newspaper told of how she was a generous lady and was from a musical family, very involved in the local church- her death being the end of a long line of an old Whitby family.
The sampler was generously gifted to Whitby Museum in 1984 by Mrs H. E Metcalf of Whitby.
The original sampler was stitched on linen. It measures 265mm wide by 315mm high. Due to the condition of the sampler , this is not a completely true reproduction but a close , but not exact copy of the original.
